How do I design a good normal pattern

So in the create patterns I want to make my own normal and my own shaped pattern but doing so just confuses me.

i can help with the shaped pattern! it's a little hard to explain so i'm going to give you an example. say you have 16 strings. the first row would be 0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0 and then the second row would be 0,0,0,f,0,0,0. you then add one more knot and take away one 0 from both sides until you reach the center of the diamond. once you reach the center of the diamond, you add one more 0 on both sides and subtract one knot. since half of 16 is 8 which is an even number, it needs all 0's in the first row. however, say you have 14 strings. half of 14 is 7, which is odd so you just go ahead and do 0,0,0,f,0,0,0 as the first row. as the last row, you'd type in all 0's (should be 6 0's). hope that helps! ๐
