step by step pattern generator for normal pattern?

Hey there,New to the site, but I have been making bracelets for years. I am ready to make my own normal patterns from patterns that i have sketched out. I have tried and tried to use the generator and still have no luck, get frustrated and then give up. I have read the "how to" posts and still, I am beyond confused. Does anyone know if there is a step by step video tutorial on how to use the generator? Thanks for your time. |

Hi there! Okay I think you're probably having the same problem I used to have. I've made friendship bracelets since I was about 9 or 10.... So that makes it like 5 years. I was very familiar with how to make normal bracelets but i was confused with the generator when I first started on here 3 or 4 months ago. When I make a pattern (we will use a Chevron stripes pattern as an example) i tie all my knots from the left side then the right side and tie the knot in the middle. That was what I always considered as my first "row". So if my bracelet was 8 strings, I would first tie 3 right knots then 3 left knots and join the two together with either a left or right knot.

But if on the pattern generator you put f,f,f,f,b,b,b you will not end up with a chevron stripes pattern (btw when I say right knot that means forward "f" knot and left knot means backward "b" knot.). Instead you have to have your first row on the generator as four knots the next row as three knots (the rows will actually be the knots that are right next to each other in a straight line) so to make an 8 string chevron pattern (my earlier example) your first row will be f,f,b,b second row f,f,b and so on. Thanks for the reply TFK19.I can follow the "normal" patterns without a problem, it is putting the designs that I came up with into the generator... I want to make bracelets with 20 to 40 strings and the task seems so daunting.I have seen all the intricate high string count patterns that are posted and wonder how the heck it is done. Has anyone found or made a video tutorial of the pattern (not the bracelet) making process? Thanks again! |

I'm not sure but I know I will often use several sheets of graph paper tapes together to the width I need to make a normal pattern it's easier If you can draw it and erase if you need to and you can see your progress without having to do the "save your work" thing that takes forever (and at least in my computer locks it up) ๐

Normal patterns are tied in pairs, so that's usually what I think of when I go into the generator. But I still have trouble, too.

It is the initial order of the strings that gets me stumped (and that is the first step!), and then the proper knots to use. It seems like one pattern would take all day to generate.

@joyj this is a six year old post. We now have an interactive normal pattern generator that is easier to use. Have you tried it yet?
