So it takes quite a bit and so far I can only figure out how to use 2 colors, but if you draw a grid on an app like Procreate, rotate it 45 degrees, and place your image underneath at 60% opacity or so, you can pretty much draw the pattern. Set your grid as the reference and start a new layer, putting your pixel art over the original pic. You can transfer this to the generator by making a 1212 and changing the knots to be your pixel art. From here, just simplify the pattern and color it if you want. Anyways sorry I know it's a bit complicated but it's a step towards having an image generator for normals

I often use a grid to plan out my normal patterns before putting them into the generator. This way it is easier to know how many strings and colours I'll need and what the general structure of the pattern will be. I've never thought of combining it with an image that I trace. I think "normal from image" or "draw normal" can work, if it is limited to 1212 patterns in just two colours which can later be edited. I don't think it would be possible to automate anything more complex, because there are so many ways you can "solve" a normal pattern and not everything is possible as a normal pattern. Before the interactive normal generator was implemented, I often used a program on my computer to design my normal patterns. This program had a draw feature for normal patterns, but only with two colours. |

@halokiwi I agree, an image generator for normals is probably not going to work with a lot of colors but it's a fun idea someday
