How do I use the generator to add string to use the straight edges technique?

If the pattern is already made/uploaded to the site, you wonโ€™t be able to use the generator to add another string. You can however remake the pattern in the generator and add a string on both sides but thatโ€™s a lot of work. What I do is I print the pattern and draw a line on each side and add circles that represent the backward and forward knots.

When you go to make the pattern, switch to "Interactive Normal", then go to "new knots". Here you can select the knots you want to add. For the straight edge technique, you'll want to use forward-backward knots on the right side and backward-forward knots on the right side. To add the knots, click the plus sign on the side you want to add them to. I hope this helped!

For the interactive generator there is the issue that you can only put two new strings on the left because for one string it messes up the knotting structure.

What I usually do is use the other page of the normal generator, take either the bottom row or top row and move it to the top or the bottom (depending on which row I took). Then I add bf knots on the left side of the now uneven rows and fb knots on the right side of the uneven rows.

You also need to change the string order. Look at the order of the strings that the new top row has and also put an extra string for the edge on the left and the right.
