Is submitting a variation with more colors than the original pattern allowed?

I've noticed some variations having more colors than the original pattern, is this allowed? And if so, then how can I submit a variation like that to the website?

They are allowed for normal patterns, but not for alphas as far as I know. When you are making a variation of a normal pattern, there is a place where is says color order. You can change the order of the colors or add more colors by changing the order of the letters. If you want to add more colors, you can just write a new letter that was not in the order before, if that makes sense.
