I'm fairly new to alpha patterns and was wondering if I took normal yarn I use for crochet (not crochet thread just every day yarns say red heart brand or something) and used that in an alpha pattern, would I be able to get a bigger product more like a small wall hanging? I see a lot of cool patterns that use a large number of base strings and I figured I could make them larger using it but I don't wanna start on anything without some opinions from some more knowledgeable people.

yes it would make it larger i just wouldn't mix it with embroidery thread cause the sides of your project will look wonky (unless the crochet thread is pretty thin but most isn't)

Thanks! And yeah I'd only be using the yarn by itself 🙂

If your yarn isn’t fuzzy or pilly I would think that would be fine as long as you don’t mix with embroidery floss!

For base strings get something like crochet thread. If all your yarn is the same thickness or brand then your alpha would probably look good!

This would probably work, but I recommend using yarn for a smaller alpha first as a sort of test before you make a really big pattern
