When I make a back ward knot my strings don't switch

Are you doing a backward four both times? And doing them with the right side string? These are the only things I can think of as to why they wouldn't be switching places

Which way are you pulling the string you’re knotting with? For both halves, you should be pulling the string you’re knotting with up and to the left. You also might want to watch Masha Knots’ YouTube video called “Basic Knots”
