I've seen a lot of teardrop loops in patterns that I thought couldn't have one.

Some examples are #21832 (the picture by @srhamy28) and #8873 (the picture by @adeltaa).

Could someone explain how to do this?

Thanks 😊

so both of the patterns you mentioned are asymmetrical so it can be difficult to find a teardrop shape. it is still possible to create a teardrop loop but it isn’t advisable (triangle ends would be better). but the one for #21832 doesn’t use a teardrop loop- it uses a loop with two triangle ends which is a different technique altogether. i couldn’t find the one for #8873. since #21832 has an uneven number of strings, the process of doing the loop is different that usual. to do that, i would suggest going on youtube and searching masha knots’s video on creating a loop with an uneven amount of strings. with the other pattern, you can do a treat

sorry i pressed send before i finished typing😂 anyway... with the other pattern you can do a teardrop loop by drawing a V shape into the pattern and then knotting the teardrop loop. if you don’t know how to actually do a teardrop loop though, i suggest looking up masha knots’s youtube video on teardrop loops. i really hope that wasn’t confusing and that i helped a little bit!

i dont know how to explain this but i will try. watch Masha knots tutorial on making loops with odd number of strings, take one long string fold it in two ( dont divide it like she did ) pass another string folded in two ( one string for each side e.g dark blue and white) make sure they are both equal, then for the string sticking out (on the right ) you could use that to make the loop ( just dont cut it out until you are done with the tear drop.
If you dont understand let me know

oh sorry i didn’t look at #8873 hard enough! yes it is an even number of strings, but you would have to do the same technique as for #21832 because on color is on one side while the other color is on the other side. it is possible to make loops with both of these patterns but it is quite a difficult process like @samjossia described. that’s why i recommend just starting with triangle ends for these two patterns.

what I did was what @samjossia explained. it is pretty difficult to put the technique into words, so I'm not even gonna try. really, the only reason I understood her explanation is because I know how to do it. if you message me on instagram @madeto_inspire__ I would be able to explain it a lot better because I could send pictures, so do that if you need more help. but if you can figure it out based on the explanations here, then theres no need.

You can imagine the teardrop loop like an upside down triangle end. Any pattern where you can do triangle ends you can also do teardrop loops. Instead of finding a triangle that points up you need to find one that points down. It doesn't have to be in a place where there's an actual triangle. It just looks better that way. It can be anywhere in the pattern.

If the colours aren't symmetrical but there's still an even amount of that colour you fold the strings in half and pull them through the folded strings from the other half. That way both sides have different colours but are still connected. If a colour has an uneven amount you take a string double the length and untwist it so you can split the string into two even parts. You take one of those halves fold it and connect it again after you pulled it through the strings in the loop.

I've written a tutorial on triangle ends. It's not the exact same thing but it might still be helpful since as I said it's basically an upside down triangle end.
