I’ve been trying to do normal patterns, but I’m confused about the straight edges technique. I want to do a starburst, mini or large, and I looked at MashaKnots tutorial on it and it doesn’t look like she uses the technique. How do I know when to use it?

it really is just by preference... masha said in her most recent video that she only does it when the pattern is “uneven” (the knots are not symmetrical so it leans to one side)

Like @knottahti said, it really is just preference. If the pattern is not symmetrical, it will likely turn out wonky, so it's good to use the straight edges technique there. If you are not using the technique, you want to make sure that you really are consistent in your knots and that you use thread of similar thickness.

I've written a tutorial on the straight edges technique that you might want to check out

Like people said it's a preference and you can decide if you want it or not. In my tutorial I explain how to do the straight edges technique in a pattern where there arent already straight edges. If you have a pattern that has straight edges but you don't want to do them you just need to remove the string on the very left and very right and not do the knots you would have usually made onto that string.
