Can someone explain: do I add the strings in for my none base colors or do I add them as one of my base strings but I don’t use them?

You don’t use your base string to knot elements in your pattern (There would be a way how you could bring your base strings into an actual knot, but I wouldn’t recommend that if you just start learning how to do Alphas). But here’s how you actually do alphas: You have your base strings and a lead string (background color), you start at the left or the right side, to knot your first knot, go to the base string next to it, make a knot with your background color onto the second base string and go to the next base string - and do the same thing over and over again, until your first row (with your background color, I would strongly recommend you not to start right away with your pattern, just knot maybe at least 3 or even 5 (when not more) rows with your background color, to secure all of the base strings on their spot. - I hope this somewhat made sense, but don’t hesitate to ask if you have more questions to alphas!😄

I’m kinda lazy to read but if you watch the masha knots video, she goes very in depth so it will help probably
