I've noticed when I'm crocheting patterns that they can end up too squished with a single crochet and too long with FLO or BLO, as well as alternating. Which stitch will make it most to scale other than a C2C?

Have you tried a half double crochet? (I do a lot of crochet, although not tapestry. I love mosaic crochet though!)

@emiliecw wouldn't that be longer?

@kpn - it depends on your tension. You might be getting the elongation with BLO and FLO because you tend toward looser tension (as I do). It's worth doing a little swatch to see. I had two other thoughts: (1) Try doing single crochet using the "yarn under, yarn over" technique. It's very popular in amigurumi and gives a nice squarish stich that looks like an X instead of a V. (2) Try an extended single crochet. It is a little taller than a single crochet, but shorter than half double.

@kpn - I really think the "Yarn under, yarn over" single crochet might work - at least it is very square with my particular tension.
