making a patch from an alpha?

I want to make a patch for my friend's denim jacket out of an alpha pattern, but I'm not quite sure how to go about it. Is the best way to just make an alpha like normal, put some felt on the back, and then just sew it on? Or is there another way that's better? If there are any resources on this pls let me know
