I bought DMC Cotton Perle thinking it was similar to the regular thread and that I would be able to use it for my base strings in my alphas. After buying it, I realized its thickness is actually a lot less than the standard DMC thread (Mouline Special I think) I use for my normal bracelets.I know that you should use strings of the same thickness for the leading strings, but I'm not sure if the base strings can be of a different thickness. |

The base strings can have a different thickness, but I'd recommend going bigger rather than smaller. This way the knots won't be as elongated.

I use dmc cotton pearl in size 8 for my base strings and it’s fine for me. I just push up my knots with a ruler and nothing looks elongated, at least to me.
