Base strings with keychains (not when you have an uneven number)

how do you make base strings for keychains long enough to hold and tie onto, but not so long that you end up wasting a lot of string when you finish? I have trouble with keychains for this reason and I hate to waste string. Usually my scraps are too small to use for other things, so that's the main problem with leftovers.

this may be oddly specific, but i usually do at least one foot per 20 rows+more if you are planning on having an ending that’ll require more length 🙂

@katdog1210 ty for the specificness lol but I don't usually do fancy endings for keychains 🙁 thank you so much for the suggestion tho, I'll try it!

Use previous keychains to mesure how long they make. For exemple, for me, 1cm = 6 rows. Like this I can predict how big my keychain will be and cut accordingly 🙂

For me, one inch is about 12 rows

@ningc98 @marie_k that helps but it's really hard to tie onto such short strings, how do y'all do it? or any tips?

First, I figure out how many rows there are. If the numbers not equally divisible by 12 then I round up just to be safe. After rounding up, I double it to have the length of one base string. If you’re doing a loop, you’ll have to double it again and add a few more inches just in case.

I hope that makes sense. I don’t think I explained it very well 😅

Do you mean for normal patterns or alphas ? Cause for alphas you dont knot with your based strings so it's not an issue. Unfortunately I don't do keychains with normal patterns so I can't really help...

@ningc98 that does make sense but still seems like you'd have a lot of excess thread

Not really, because I make my ties pretty long on bracelets but on keychains I usually do a little bit less-like an extra 2-3 instead of doubling.
