What was meant to be a square Alpha turned rectangular

Help! I just finished pattern #169395 (https://www.braceletbook.com/patterns/alpha/169395/) and it turned out very rectangular. I used the same thread as my working strings for my base strings. What would be causing this issue? I have made other alphas and a similar thing happened.

Alphas will naturally elongate due to the knotting. To solve this, use a thicker string, such as thin crochet thread, but tie the knots with the same embroidery floss. This will cause the knots to also become wider, which should make the result look a little better.

You can also- tie looser knots - push the knots up with a ruler after each row |
