Just try pulling a little softer, as long as they’re getting all the way against the previous string you shouldn’t see holes

If your strings snap it normally depends on the brand. Try to pull a bit looser and sometime it can be due to having bad quality string

DMC is literally the BEST brand ever it never snaps and hold so well. And it's cheap!

If you want a lot of colors and durability, and you are willing to pay, dmc is a pretty good brand. Its just more expensive. But if you want cheaper threads with a slightly smaller range, use prism. They come in good value packs in amazon. The jumbo pack i found has 79 solid colors and 26 color shifting ones.

I definitely recommend the string they sell at Dollarama which is comprised of many fine strings which make up the thread. Any type of thread with smaller visible strings that make it up are typically higher quality.

Also if you do break strings it is quite easy to tie a string back in so at least you can keep going!

I use prism and it works really good. You also might not want to pull so tight.

Just try to not pull as hard. Also if that doesn’t work you can get like 100-200 string rolls for like 10-13$ and like in the $20 range when you get a carrier and I always buy mine off of amazon and they never fail me! Do you want the brand I use?
