I am assuming you are referring to knotting the pattern rather then designing the pattern. It will take practice, perhaps using 2 base strings rather then one could help. It might be worth a try adjusting your tension to see if that helps too. 🙂

If you are talking about designing patterns: if you use "alpha from image" you'll most likely need to tweak the pattern, so it becomes acceptable.
