Wall Hanging dowels!

Whenever I try to make a wall hanging, no matter how many strings it has, it's always super small. The strings always only cover a small portion of the dowel so it's a lot longer than the actual wall hanging. I was thinking it might be because my dowels are too thick, but I don't know! Am I just an idiot or is this actually a common issue 😂

I noticed my wallhangings are bigger when I use DMC thread over other brands (idk why though). But my dowels will usually be too long unless I am making a large pattern. I just use scissors to dent the wooden dowel and then I bend off the excess wood.

for small wall hangings i like to use skewers instead of dowels! u can buy them in the bbq section at the grocery store and they work rlly well for small wall hangings, and you can normally cut them with scissors it just takes a while 🙂 for bigger wall hangings, or if you want to keep using dowels i would suggest sawing the dowels so they’re smaller that’s what i normally do. if u can’t do it yourself, if you have a dad or brother or someone who’s handy with tools you could ask them to help maybe?

For now, I've been cutting or sawing mine off after I finished the wallhanging. Sawing is obviously better because then the wood can't splinter, but ain't nobody got time for that...I always need to sand them afterwards though, and I'm guessing if the excess is not too long, you might as well just sand it off instead of cutting it. |

I usually use aluminum wire. it can be a little tricky to bend the right way at first, but it's cheaper and really easy to bend/cut after the fact.

You can try using thicker base strings or just thicker thread in general. This will make the knots bigger.

I would recommend one e you get the first row dome of your wall hanging I would try to separate your string a little it I will give it the look of it being bigger without actually being to big but don’t go to far or you will see gaps and it won’t look right I hope this helps

@a8309 your welcome it helps me a lot and it doesn’t look so bunched up and I don’t pull my strings so tight I do it nice and loose until I finish my first row and then it makes it easier to separate my string then I tighten up just a little bit and it comes out so neat

I have three different sizes of dowels. I have the large ones for huge tapestries, the medium ones for large tapestries (the medium dowels are the same length as the large ones), and the small ones for small tapestries
