I recently bought stuff to start making wall hangings and i’m super excited! i’ve made a few alphas now, and i’ve made one wallhanging before so i know how to do it and everything.

But some of the wallhanging patterns i’ve found that i really want to make have an odd number of base strings. Is there a technique or tutorial to make a wall hanging with an odd number of base strings that still looks as neat and good? or is my best option to just add an extra string on one side of the pattern and try continue the pattern?

Two options that I know of:

- use the other end of your leading string as the first base string. Just tie the leading string to the dowel using a larks head knot and leaving one end the same length as the other base strings. I even prefer this method because you won't have any issues with your first leading string having a loose end that might poke out.

- split a string in half so it's only 3 strands instead of 6. Tie it to the dowel using a larks head knot. Use both ends as one base string. This way it has the same thickness as your other base strings.

@halokiwi ooh thank you so so much! those are both great ideas!!!! and it solves the problem of the leading string too, i usually just thread the leading string through some other knots so i can cut it off like the rest of the leading strings, but that would work so much better! thank you!!

another idea is to do the larks head knot with one side as long as your base strings and the other side shorter. When you make the first knot, make it over your base string + the « tail » (small other part) to « lock it in » 🙂 hope it helps 😅

depending on how i want the wall hanging to look, i’ll do the techniques shared. if you want it to look how a even stringed wall hanging would, you can add one extra string so it’s even and then when you start, pull out one of the base strings within the middle of the row of them and then cut it with a little bit still there so you can glue it to the back of the wall hanging
