Large pattern on keychains

i recently bought D ring keychains on Amazon and they are 1.9 cm. i found i can loop a maximum of 7-8 strings (for patterns up to 15 strings + leading string). i kinda want to make wider patterns (like 20 ish strings so 10-12 loops). any tips on how to start the keychain without making it bulcky ? As an example of what i mean there is mjlgvw pictures on pattern #12722 |
