To get the hang of segment knotting, I would suggest choosing a super basic pattern, like some kind of chevron or candy stripe and following the pattern. The first pattern I ever read/segment knotted was #23322. The knot structure is very similar to a candystripe, so I was able to figure out how to do it pretty easily. In terms of how to actually segment knot though, there’s no right place to start. You can technically start wherever, but for certain patterns, there may be a easier or more aesthetically pleasing way to start. For example, if you look at #43060, you could do a triangle start and begin the pattern at the white reverse chevron. Once you do your start, just knot a reverse chevron with white, then with blue, then with purple, etc until you get to the orange knot. Once you get there, you do a chevron with the pink, then the purple, then the blue, etc until you get back to the white. Just knowing how to do the basic patterns, like chevrons and candy stripes can take you really far into segment knotting. My biggest tip is to try not to get overwhelmed and just look at one color at time. Try to find what shape you can make using that color. While most normal patterns can be segment knotted, I think there may be a few that can’t, like 1212 patterns since they’re just made of fb and bf knots. I know this response was kind of long, but I hope it helped. If you’re still confused, maybe try to follow a pattern tutorial while looking at the pattern so that you can visualize how it’s segment knotted.
