Alpha pattern issue

I recently started an alpha pattern and the design on the pattern looks stretched. I haven’t had this issue before and I don’t know what to do. I have tried making my knots tighter and nothing is working. Do any of you have suggestions?

Knots usually end up being more rectangular than square which can make the pattern look stretched. Sometimes tying the knots tighter can actually make it worse. That has happened on a couple bracelets I’ve made and when I started tying them not as tight everything kind of evened out. I’m not sure if it will help but it’s an idea 🤷🏻♀️
