Double dowels

Has anyone tried to do 2 vertical dowels instead of a horizontal one? I know how I could do this I just dont know if it will look okay. I want to do a wall hanging pattern but its wider and I dont think it will look good with a horizontal dowel so I was thinking maybe I could start with a dowel on the side of the pattern and then end with one on the other and hot glue a string on for hanging so it doesnt slip. Does this soud dumb?

I would suggest trying it with a smaller pattern first!
