Is it possible to save the amount of thread for the base strings of alpha patterns by splitting a 6 strand thread to 3 strands- making it two pieces of threads? Would the different thickness for the base strings be an issue?

@Xenautical, theoretically, yes. But, most people find that their alphas elongate when they knot them on one base string, so they knot on two base strings instead of one. Personally, I knot all my wallhangings on two strings so they will be wider. I'm sure there's no harm in trying to knot on thinner base strings, but I think it will probably elongate even more.

Hope this helps!

and it could snap because of the friction of you moving your leading strings up and down

I usually use packs of string instead of my dmc for base strings. This way it is not as expensive. Walmart sells packs of 36 black and white skeins for under $5

You can also use string that isn't embroidery floss for the base strings. This way it's even less expensive.
