I have seen this a lot in posts on Instagram. What does it mean to double base strings? How does it work?? Thank you!!

It means tying over two strings instead of one. Many people use thicker base strings (like size 3 crochet thread) instead of doing doubled strings. It's easier to keep your knots nice and even when the base strings are thicker.
