Running out of black thread (a constant struggle)

hello gamers (and nongamers alike), Running out of white/black thread has always been a constant struggle for me, as someone who makes bracelets. However, I've recently had the misfortune of falling into the pit of bordered/outlined patterns and now my problem has only intensified. ofc, i like to mix and match color palettes for any pattern I make- but as someone who is *incredibly* lazy and a former emo kid, black has a very special place in my heart, and it physically hurts me to constantly run out of it. I've been using substitutes for black more and more (like a super dark blue, or even something wildly different for certain patterns/palettes) but it just doesn't hit the same. I've tried looking on amazon for those bulk black thread things for 24 skeins for like $7, tho all the reviews are from people who do embroidery rather than friendship bracelets and I wanted to know if y'all had any go-tos for where to buy black thread. !! For some context, I mostly use DMC Embroidery floss (and occasionally craft thread) and make both alpha and normal bracelets. I've recently been looking into some alternatives, like different color yarns and threads with mixed results. TL;DR- any good places to buy black thread of substitutes? thank you in advance! |

Hey @Penntem! I have also had this problem. I'm from a super small town where the nearest Michaels is 5 hours away, and they only sell small bulk packs of white, but not black. I've also looked on amazon, with no luck.I widened by search however, and found aliexpress. I found both black and white bulk packs for pretty cheap. I paid $48.80 Canadian dollars for 480 skeins of thread (240 of black, 240 of white). While that does sound like a lot at first, on average it's 10.2 cents per skein, waaayyy cheaper than anything else I have ever come across (vs Michaels bulk packs, at 16.7 cents per skein). It initially said it would take about 3 months to arrive, which wasn't ideal, but I decided I could deal with it because it was so cheap. It ended up arriving in about a month, which was great! I have tried out the white a bit, and it seems to be making the same size knots as regular 6-strand embroidery floss, so I'm very impressed with it so far! Here is the link if you, or anyone else is interested: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005001844341284.html?spm=a2g0s.9042311.0.0.4d634c4dvGpCPD If you do decide to order something off Aliexpress, look around a bit on the website first, there are usually several stores selling the exact same packages of thread, but some will have different prices on the thread and some will have different shipping prices. Make sure you get the best deal you can! 🙂 |

I just empty out the bins of black DMC at Michael's with a good coupon. They run 40% off all regular priced items on your order fairly frequently and DMC doesn't ever go on sale. They usually have two bins of black and I get it all at once, two good handfuls, for cheaper than lower quality threads

maybe try to see if you can find crochet thread thats around the same size as the embroidery thread you use, i always use crochet thread for alpha base strings if its a black or white background but i havent tried it on normal patterns

I've just bought a bunch of black and white from aliexpress for very little money. Dont know what the quality will be like, although I guess it's better than nothing... The only shop near me that sells embroidery thread is reaaalllly liimited (sells 5 different colour packs, no individual sheins) so I kinda have to go online

For me I just picked a random pack of black and white thread from Amazon. As long as it's embroidery floss and looks similar to the rest, it most likely will work for friendship bracelets. It's good to try and find some in a store though since it's easier to compare skeins.

I bought Dmc Petra size 5 for my black and white thread. It is knitting and crochet thread, is cheaper than embroidery floss, comes in a ball, has a length of 400m (you won't run out fast) and combines well with embroidery floss.I saw @clairehair use it, so I thought I'd try it for myself and it works well. |

On amazon I found a 96-pack of black and white thread and I think it was 11 dollars or something and that would probably last you a while

YES! I use black more than any color and depending on who the bracelet is for (me or a gift) I like to use only DMC thread. DMC does sell the black 6 strand embroidery floss in a 500 gm cone. That's a little over 2200 yds of floss. It's about $60 and is available on Amazon or directly from DMC. I've never seen it in Joann's or Michael's but it could be available on their websites. Google DMC 500 cone and you'll see a bunch of different sellers pop up but here are a couple. embroidery thread works for me, sometimes if it’s too thin i double it, or split it into 6 strands and take 2 or 3 to add to the original piece. not super efficient if your trying to work fast, but i’m not willing so spend so much on bulk pack from dmc lol
