I want to use this pattern to make an alpha that says "my georgie" (my name is george, it's for my boyfriend) it has a y and a g, and i want to be able to use the flower pattern too on the ends... how many base strings would i need?

17. or 19 if you want two knots of the background string on each side.

I believe that you would need 20 base strings for this bracelet if you want all the letters on the same line, as the y goes the farthest down, and the i goes the farthest up. Like this:

00000000000000000000000 1
0000--000000000000000000 2
0000--000000000000000000 3
00000000000000000000000 4
000----000------00----00000000 5
00------00--------00----00000000 6
000--000000--000----0000000 7
000--000000----00----0000000 8
00----000000----00----0000000 9
00--0000000----0----00000000 10
0------0000000--------00000000 11
0----000000000----000000000 12
000000000000----000000000 13
00000000000----0000000000 14
00000000000----0000000000 15
00000000000--00000000000 16
0000000000----00000000000 17
0000000----0--000000000000 18
00000000------000000000000 19
00000000000000000000000 20

(It looks a little wonky, but it's more for the dimensions.)

You have to check what the letter is that reaches the highest and what the letter is that reaches the lowest. I think in your case i reaches the highest and y reaches the lowest. Then you have to check the amount of rows these two letters use if put next to each other. If I didn't miscount in this case it would be 18 rows. Then you only have to decide how much border you want on each side to determine the amount of base strings.

Another thing you could do, is to take a piece of graph paper and use it to draw a pattern of what you are going to knot. This way you have it visualised.
