I have been really struggling to read the normal patterns. I understand normal knots ( forward backwards ect ) and have been making bracelets for just over four years however I can’t move on to more complicated bracelets as i can’t figure out Which string goes where with all of the arrows.

Hi, there are two methods of knotting normal patterns: row-by-row and segment-knotting.

Segment knotting is when you knot in diagonals as much as possible. If you have knotted a candystripe or chevron, you most likely already did that.

When you knot row by row, you always make all knots in a horizontal row before moving to the next horizontal row.

Segment knotting is generally faster than knotting row by row and the process is a bit more intuitive. Segment knotting can be confusing especially in more complex patterns, but you can always switch to knotting row by row which might take a bit longer but you have to think less about what you are doing.

I recommend watching or reading tutorials on both to see which method you prefer.

Here is a tutorial I wrote on segment knotting: https://www.braceletbook.com/tutorials/97_how-to-segment-knot/

My number one advice for figuring out how to segment knot a pattern, is to print it out or take a screenshot and then draw the segments into it.

When I’m segment knotting, I’ll do a segment, then make sure that all the strings are in the right spot, and you can check by looking between the knots. Additionally, on the BraceletBook website, you can tap on a string and see where it goes throughout the pattern

I learned segment knotting by starting with reading an easy normal pattern that I hadn’t made yet to try getting the hang of it. For example, I did #23322 which is basically just a candystripe with fb/bf knots on rows 7 and 18. It helped me get the hang of reading normals and understanding where to make knots
