how do you keep the strings apart on the first few rows? I struggle with that because they always go together. 😐

I’m not quite sure what you mean, would you be willing to take a picture of this and temporarily make it your profile picture?

You mean they tangle because they're so long? I roll the end of every string up like a skein, make a knot with the rolled up part (= shorter string) and then place them very carefully on the table around the bracelet to make sure that the skeins don't tangle. Looks a bit like a sun with its rays in all directions.

You're welcome. 🙂 Are you doing normal bracelets or alphas? With alphas you could make your strings shorter as it is super easy to replace them once they get too short. All you have to do is adding a new string the way you do when you add a new colour. Only that it is the same colour.

I just got into alphas myself a few months back and in the beginning it was quite confusing, but meanwhile, since I've figured out how to do them and got some practice as well, I'd say that alphas are easier to do than normals.

Here's a great video about alphas and the flat alpha technique by Marsha knots: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_YVFAX9sacw In this video you'll find everything you need to know for a start. (I assume that you're familiar with forward knots, backward knots, forward-backward knots and backward-forward knots since you're doing normals.)

The only thing that I'd do different is the pattern. For your first alpha I'd suggest a pattern with only two colours. My first one was #73917 as it has big patches of colour (instead of tiny spots that require changing colour all the time). But that's just a personal thing, every 2-colour pattern will do. What helped as well a lot was doing a few test bracelets with quite thick crochet yarn (the one you'd usually take for potholders). Somehow it was a lot easier to start with thick yarn and get used to embroidery floss later when I already knew the alpha technique.

My personal experience, other users here for sure would recommend something else. Everybody has their own style. In the end, the only thing that really matters is practice, practice, practice. Just give it a try, it's really fun! 🙂

@rhoskins i'd suggest checking out masha knots' video about different types of starts and ends, if it's still not clear, Alexinnovations also has a video on starts and end that could be helpful.
