When I make alphas I always question how long my base strings have to be, they usually end up being too long. They never make knots but there needs to be enough near the end to be able to have a good grip, so I was wondering if there is a way to measure how long based on the number of lines????

I am planning on starting #49009

usually, i just sort of measure it off of other alphas i’ve made, but the thing is is that everyone knots differently, so you can only really get a rough estimate. personally, i think 6-8 rows for me is an inch, but yours could be much different. so if you just makes a few then you could figure out how many you need for future alphas.

i would say for #49009, about 10-12 inches..... i dunno if you do metric or anything but that’s what is for me in the murican system

hi yea if you look at the top of the screen there should be measurements for #49009 they are 46x60 46 across and 60 down (centimeters i think) i like to do 10-15 centimeters more for a good grip hope this helped 🙂

Normally, I measure out the length of the pattern in cm, then I add a foot for ties on each end. 🙂

@idkemma Those are the dimensions of the pattern in pixels/knots, not in cm.

Use another alpha you’ve made to measure how long your rows are (this will be different for everyone). I recommend measuring how long ten of your rows are and then dividing that number by ten, because that will give you a more accurate number than just measuring one row. Multiply the number of rows in this pattern (60 in this case) by your row length to get an approximate length of the completed pattern, then add around 15 extra centimeters for grip and ties. You might want them even longer than that depending on what type of ties you’ll be doing. If you’re making this pattern as a wall hanging on a dowel, make sure to make each string you cut twice as long as it needs to be, because you’ll be folding it in half.

i recommend measuring another alpha that’s close to the same length in rows. if you’re making ties at the end then add a little extra string. you also probably want extra string for grip because it can be difficult to work with short strings. it’s better to cut them longer than you needed because i’ve had bracelets where there was only a couple inches left of base strings and it was very difficult to finish the bracelet. if you make lots of alphas you will eventually figure out how long you need strings to be. also if you have lots of extra string you can save it and use it later on if there’s an alpha pattern where you only need a small amount of one color. that way you don’t have to waste string you can just use the leftovers from other bracelets!
