To start out, I live in a tiny rural area. Within the last two years, though, we got a Hobby Lobby, and there's a Michael's not too far away (as in.... Two hours' drive), but... I don't know where to get some of this (where to even look), and that's about all we have.1. Glow in the dark embroidery floss??? I got one from Michael's, but I think it was on clearance, and they only had one, but I love this stuff, can't afford to drive that far every time I need more, and can't find it anywhere else... (I also don't know if Michael's even still has this stuff...) I tried Google, but came up dry, so if anybody knows anything specific sites/links/key words that would be incredibly helpful... 2. The D-shaped key rings? Literally never seen those around here before... but those are so cool... And useful. And I have no clue where to get them. Or anything about them, really. I just saw them on here and thought "wow, those are amazing." 3. Metallic threads? I can get some at Hobby Lobby, I know, but unless I catch a sale or something, they seem to be, comparatively, pretty expensive there... Or maybe they just are? Don't really know... I don't use these very often, it seems like, but also I'm never sure if I'll be able to replace them, so there are things I'd like to do with the stuff but haven't because I'm not sure if I have enough... Or if there will be more when I get there... 4. Neons? I got some that came in a box I got to store my string, but I don't need another box, and I Do need more neons, but I can't find them anywhere else... Also, if anybody knows if DMC makes neon threads, what those would be called? That's kind of my favorite brand, and it's one I seem to be able to get around here, and, in theory, they would be the same thickness as most of my other thread then... 5. How do you keep your "base colors" as I call them (a term I got from my mom who crochets obsessively and just means colours you use the most of) stocked? Those would be black, white, greys, and, for me especially, blues. I use so much of this stuff... I have bracelets I can't start because I'm completely out of black thread... And it doesn't seem to matter how much I buy, I always need more... So if there's anybody who can keep their base colors stocked, please share your secrets!!! Knotting questions are less about the knots themselves and more about... Technique? Is that the right word? I guess not really? But also sort of? 1. How do you compensate for different thicknesses in your strings? I recently made an alpha that was a lava lamp, and the four colors were four different thicknesses. It ended up with a couple weird shapes in the edges because of that... I'm wondering if that's just going to be A Thing, or if there's a way to compensate. 2. If anybody's worked with DMC's satin embroidery floss, do you have any tips? This thread is super slippery and keeps coming out on me... And I think that's it, even though I know there's at least one that's escaped me... So if anybody has any answers for me? Please? |

Hi so I can’t help with the glow in the dark string but I can help with some of the other things. So for the keychain pieces I found them on amazon and there are heaps to chose from. For the metallic threads dmc has some on their website that you can buy along with neons. I’m pretty sure they have different sections on their website categorising their types of threads. Their are lots of packs of white and black threads on amazon but I don’t know about the blues sorry. You can change the size of your knots by loosening or tightening them. I haven’t worked with the satin but I have worked with slippery thread and what I did was made my knots really tight and then made the next knot as soon as I could. I hope this helped you 😁

Here’s a link to the glow in the dark embroidery floss https://www.michaels.com/dmc-light-effects-floss-glow-in-the-dark/10379263.htmlI’ve never personally tried it, but I know that DMC does metallic and glow and the dark string. If you search up DMC light effects, you might get more results as well |

@kindakrazy I really recommend AliExpress for the d ring hooks! They sell those at Amazon the same thing but just 10x more expensive. For me it took abt 2-3 weeks wait but well worth it for the amount of money I saved from instead of buying them on Amazon! If you need them quicker, they do have them on Amazon and a few searches with the words D-ring swivel Clasps should work!

i know you said you can't go to michael's too often but next time you do take a trip there you should check out the loops and threads brand. it only comes in "bulk" (i think it's 36 skeins which are each about 8 yards long) which seems to be what you are looking for. the packs come in either embroidery floss or craft cord which can both be mixed with DMC. i prefer the embroidery floss so maybe before you buy it make sure it is the kind you want. it is a michael's brand i think but if you don't live near michael's then you can order the string online from the michael's website. they have a pack of just neon colors, one with just blacks, one with just whites, and tons of other packs that are around $5 per pack. for the metallic threads i have some from DMC but they're a pain to work with because they fray so much. yes they are pretty expensive so i wouldn't waste your money on it unless you really want it. i bought a big pack of the "d rings" on amazon for around $10. here is the link for those: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07QWJV5MZ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 knotting with threads of different thicknesses will result in the bracelet turning out weird. especially in alphas. also if you want something like glow in the dark thread you can probably find some on amazon. there's also tons of other embroidery floss brands on amazon that are pretty good quality and you can buy them in large packs of 100 or something like that. i hope i answered most of your questions and that this was helpful! |

I don’t have the link at the moment, but there’s a pack of 24 black and 24 white (48 in total) skeins of floss on Amazon! It’s less than $10 too I believe (:

@reedy12, @oceanknot, @pivi685, @danielle_3, @potato1122, @blahblah11, @AK_KNOTS, @allialexis, @ellbellThanks so much, you guys! I'll admit a lot of this I feel like I should have thought of myself, but thanks for the help 😂 I can't *believe* I forgot about *Amazon*... Of all things... That makes me feel pretty dumb, I must admit. I did find a couple packs of bulk black and white the other day, so I'm currently restocked on that, but who knows how long that will last... Guess I'll just have to pay more attention to when I'm getting low. Thanks again, everybody! |

For your alphas with different thick strands there are three things I recommend you: 1. The flat alpha technique, 2. Make all your knots the same size - thinner strings you knot looser, thicker strings you knot tighter and 3. Practice, practice and practice more - that I make with making as many alphas as possible - I feel like I never stop learning something.

If you have thread that is different sizes you can either do 2 things:

1- use 2 strands of thread instead of 1, so for example if you need 5 strands of blue in a bracelet cut 10 strands and pair them up so that it becomes only 5 strands. 2- separate the thread of the thicker string. For example embroidery floss normally has 6 individual strands in it, you can separate it to only 3,4 or 5 pieces to make it thinner

I have a wholesale account with a company that distributes DMC thread, so I buy thread in bulk - both packs, and I buy a LOT of cones. If there's something you really can't get I could add it to my next wholesale order! For satin thread, try choosing only one color and using satin thread for that. Works well for metallic threads as well. |
