Squished/Stretched Looking Alphas

Hello!! Something I’ve noticed whenever making alphas is how the pattern I’m making always ends up looking like it’s been stretched out from the top to bottom when completed. For example, in the pattern I’m currently working on (#74146) the head is supposed to be more of a circle, but when actually knotted out, it looks more like an oval. Same thing happened to pattern #36436 when I did it where it looks more stretched than necessary if you compare the reference to the photo of took of the finished patterned Pretty much I just wanted to know if this issue is because of how tightly I’m making my knots or if that’s just how alphas are! Hopefully this all make sense, but yeah! That’s pretty much it!

same thing is happening with mine! someone suggested to double your base strings, so you'd be knotting around two base strings at a time (apparently that is supposed to make your knots as wide as they are tall) but I have yet to try it... seems like that might work though!

but yup I was making a circular pattern and... its oval 😭

It definitely isn't you, more of it's how both Alpha's and how the knots themselves are.
Knots are taller than they are wide, so the result will end up a little different (less squared) than the pattern grid. Also, what generally happens with Alpha's is that the row of backwards knots are wider than the forward knots, it takes a fair bit of practice to get those equal.
Like what was previously said, doubling the base strings will help, or even just using a thicker type of string for the base strings. I also find pushing up the knots as far as they will go will help to give some shape.

@Sun_String Ohh I’ve never heard about doubling the base strings, but that definitely seems like it’ll help! And yeah, it hurts on SUCH a different level to be so happy with the knots your making so far and then you realize it looks way longer than it shoulddd

@Someone_ Thank you for your suggestion as well, using thicker string for the bases seems like it’d work better too!! I’m definitely going to test each of those options to see what works best on the next alpha pattern I do!

Agreed; it SUCKS to see a stretched out alpha when u don't want one! I am working on trying to do more alphas and experience the same problems. I found making my knots as tight as possible helped a little with shape but definitely gonna have to try double base strings! Thanks for asking this question because I have been thinking about asking this too!
