i don’t have a thin base string, is it alright if i use a thicker base string and then a thinner string on top? hope this makes sense

If you're making an alpha, this shouldn't be much of a problem, as long as they aren't a lot thicker than your leading string

And make sure that all of your basestrings are the same thickness
