Combining an alpha and a normal pattern + first time segment knotting by following a pattern

I’ve never combined an alpha with a normal nor have I ever followed a normal pattern. I know how to segment knot, but I’ve only memorized segments by watching videos. I decided that I want to combine pattern #23322 with #65118 . I’m removing 2 base strings from the sunflower pattern, so it will only need a 19 string normal. Is the normal pattern too hard if it’s my first time following a normal pattern? Do you think the sunflower will look good with the normal pattern? I’m debating if I should try reading a pattern I haven’t made before, or just make something simple like a chevron or a candystripe and combine that with the sunflower. Let me know 😄

if you have never made a normal pattern before I certainly wouldn't start with that normal pattern. I would try a chevron then a pattern like #31525 which is easy to segment knot before doing more difficult normals.

The normal pattern is perfect for a first time reading a normal pattern. It's basically like a candy stripe but it switches directions in row 7 and 18.I think the sunflower will look nice with it. I think if you made the normal pattern in shades of blue so it looks a little like the sky it would look especially nice. |

@2006_Mandy I have made many normal patterns before, I just meant I haven’t read a normal pattern before, I’ve only followed tutorials.

@halokiwi Ok, thank you! I also forgot to ask, how long should I cut my strings and what would be best way to start the pattern since it has an odd number of strings.

Ok that makes sense yes definetely if you have made normal patterns before reading patterns should be pretty easy and the pattern you want to use is good. Also to start I personally would choose to do a triangular end. As for how long to cut the strings I would say cut at least half a wingspan for each string plus the length that will be needed for the alpha part If that makes any sense

@2006_Mandy Yeah, that makes sense, but I’m probably just going to add in strings for the alpha part instead of knotting with the base strings since I already have scrap string that would work for the alpha part.

For the alpha part you leave the normal strings as the base strings and add in a leading string so you will be able to use scrap thread easily

I think you should be fine! The normal pattern looks pretty easy and cute and I think it will look really good! Can’t wait to see what it looks like!
