So I think I can do alphas from buckles now with an even amount of strings. But I've seen in pictures alphas from buckles with like for example 15 strings. How would I make a buckle with an odd number of strings?

So 15 base strings? Here's how I do it. I'm assuming you start with a typical loop style buckle. Cut 7 strings twice the length needed for your base strings, since they'll be folded in half. Now, with those folded in half, notice that you only have 14 strings. You still need one more. That 15th string is going to come from your background/working string. You'll also be making your buckle with the background color string. Take your background string, and wind it into a skien, or bobbin, or whatever you normally do. Leave an end hanging off that's as long as your other base strings, plus 12 to 18 inches to make your buckle with. Now, line this end up with your other base strings. So you should have your 14 base strings lined up with your background string, which is much longer and wrapped around a bobbin or something. Like usual, your buckle will be about a 1 1/2 inch section in the middle of the base strings. (Which will then be folded in half to start your bracelet.) So, working with the long end of your background string (the end coming off of the bobbin), start making your buckle just like normal, half hitch or Chinese staircase or whatever. You should have a base string length tail hanging off the end. This long piece becomes your base string. So once your buckle's finished, just tie your knots across like normal, on to your 15 base strings. 14 will be whatever color you chose for them, 1 will be the same color as your background string-because it is your background string!! I really hope that made sense, if not, let me know and I can maybe email you photos or something.

If you need 15 base strings, not including the leading string, just cut 7 base strings, and for the last one, seperate it into to 3 strand strings, so that way when you do the larks head knots, it will combine into one string. Keep in mind that you have to make the strings 2x as long since your folding it. If you need 1 ft, then cut 2 ft per strings. If its 15 strings including the leading string, just make the 7th base string your leading string. |
