how do you calculate thread length?

This is a question that should be helpful to all because thread length will always vary on the pattern and the start and end. I like to make mine a wingspan normally when I make it with a loop but for larger bracelets I might make them longer. In general I just know the amount of length I need I don’t measure it I just cut it as long as I believe is needed and I tend to have a little extra. So far I haven’t had to add in string because I ran out except for when my strings would split. People have different methods so I’m just wondering if there is an effective way to measure strings length.

I get a ruler, and measure three feet

I don't really know of any effective way to calculate thread length! Sorry! But I can tell you that you would rather have your strings longer than what you really need rather than having them be shorter! (short strings are incredibly annoying)

I usually cut mine about a meter long if i make twisted or braided ties on each side and about 80 cm if i make a loop, but sometimes i run out of string or sometimes they're too long, so just try different lengths and see what works for you!

@2006_Mandy go on @sodapop's profile and there it says how long you need to cut your thread.

Some patterns might have only a few strings that use up considerably more length than the rest of the strings... like a single color zigzag down the center for example, will get short very quickly, while some other strings are hardly used and most of it is leftover.

You can somewhat plan for this by examining the pattern first. In the pattern diagram, isolate the path of each individual string and count the knots used, take notes. Compare which strings use the most knots or the least, then you'll know which ones to make longer or shorter. A good starting measurement for me expands from my outstretched fingertips to my opposite shoulder (about 38" or 100cm) then I estimate how much to add or subtract from there. Minor adjustments for loops or long ties. 😊

Something elso to keep in mind is if it's an alternating or progressing pattern like a dovetail or fishbone. The first rotation will use more of one color, but as the bracelet progresses, the other colors catch up. So overall, they use approximately the same length once you cycle through all the rotations.

I have the same problem. I have for all the strings about 100 cm except the loop thread a bit more. Always end up with strings that are still long enough and some will be close if I have enough to the end. Like the sound of counting the knots of the colours. I will try that the next one!

With alphas I take the ties and the length I want it to be. It usually takes about 18 inches (Before Ties) just so I don't get annoyed when i'm ready to braid the ends after i finish.
I found with a regular arrowhead I use 3 ft for each string. There's typically 12 strings 6 colors (double) and you can make 4 of the same arrowheads using 6 different things of string.
I started measuring and writing down the lengths because I was tired of running out of string and having too much at the end of my bracelet, but not enough to do anything with it.
Good Luck
