Dashes in between letters in typed pattern

Recently I made a pretty large pattern that I didn't submit because there were a lot of similar colors but id still like to make it for myself. When I was comparing the photo to the typed version I noticed there were a lot of dashes between letters and I was Just wondering if anyone new what these are/mean.

On the "alpha" page of the pattern generator, colour A is represented by - instead of the letter a. Is that what you mean?
