1. I notice that when I want to add strings in my normal pattern on the left it messes the pattern up even if I add two strings on both the left and right (with bf knots on the right and fb knots on the left). It would be nice if the generator didn't mess up my patterns when I try adding in strings on both sides. The order of the strings on top should also stay the same not shift over (if that makes any sense). This would make my life so much easier when I am making patterns.

2. to be able to add variations where I can change a few knots and still post under the original pattern. When I make alphas I often want to change a few knots especially in wall hangings but doing this has to be done in my head which messes my pattern up sometimes. I notice on normal patterns I can go into the pattern generator and change the colour of the strings so I would hope someday it would be possible to alter patterns slightly in the generator.

3. being able to merge colours in the alpha pattern generator for variations (I say this because I have several variations that I wanted to merge colours but I can't post them as the generator labels the colours as identical and doesn't merge them).

@2006_Mandy i absolutely see where you are coming from on wanting to be able to modify alphas when creating variations - i often need to edit them to accommodate for the shape of my knots and prevent the patterns from warping. i enter the 'add a variation' page and copy and paste the knots code and colours into a new pattern so that i can edit it 🙂

1) How the interactive normal generator currently behaves when adding an odd amount of strings on the left side is due to the structure of normal patterns.

Row 1 starts with a knot in the first position. If a singular string could be added without changes, the structure needed to be changed. The first knot would need to be at the second position. Alternatively the second row could be turned into the first row. Both options seem to be complex to actually implement.

2) the recognition of variations works based on the knot structure. Currently two patterns with the same knot structure are recognized as variations. If now you were able to make changes to a pattern and it would have the same knotting structure as another pattern, what pattern would this count as a variation to? When is a pattern still similar enough to be recognized as a variation? When is it its own pattern?

I think an option to change knots without being able to submit the pattern would be a good middle way.

3) this would again cause the same issue. The way in which variations are recognized would need to be changed. Also what would happen if you merged two colours in your variation and another user merged two other colours? These two variations could be very different from each other.

merging two colors would be great! maybe it could work where you can use the draw alpha generator, but only use the fill tool rather than the knot tool.

I completely agree with 2! Even if you could just leave it in the create pattern section like @halokiwi said.
It’s so annoying to have manually recreate the alpha in create patterns before I make changes.
I do it a lot cause I’m lazy and want to use as few colors as possible
