Numbered Rows, but What About Columns?

I started my first big alpha pattern today which only consists of two colors. The second color begins on the third row, mid pattern. Since the columns are not numbered I have to count each circle/square to figure out when to bring the second color in. I've been doing this and don't mind doing so for smaller patterns, but this process is quite tedious for larger patterns. This seems like such a small detail and would be a simple addition considering the rows are already numbered for every pattern. Why aren't the columns numbered as well?

you can see how many strings you need by looking at the dimensions at the top.

or if you look at the number of strings, then you can go off that. you just need to subtract one because there’s an extra one for the leading string

I'm not talking about the total amount of string needed for the pattern as a whole. I am talking about the numbers alongside the pattern which tells you which row you are working on. I am wondering why the rows are numbered, but the columns are not. As I described, if a new color is introduced in the middle of a row on a large pattern, you would have to count how many strings (columns) in that color would be brought in. In other words, there is a physical string count horizontally, but not vertically.
