they are rewards for participating in official challenges and/or reporting duplicate patterns. There are bi-weekly and monthly official challenges and for every creation that you post which is apart of the challenge you get one reward which increases the number.

basically you follow one or more of the patterns listed in the posts, include the word challenge in the photo and then when it is accepted the moderator accepting your photo will give you the reward.
