so i think i've heard about these and i think they're about challenges but what does the number on your avatar/picture mean?

They are rewards, you can get them by participating in official challenges or by reporting duplicate patterns, i think they help to rank up faster.

They are 'rewards' which you can earn by submitting photos for the Official Weekly and Official Monthly Challenges (forum in the Challenges forum). You can also earn rewards by reporting duplicate patterns and error/bugs in the app/site.

ok are all challenges official and if not how do you know the difference besides it just saying official .... challenge

Official challenges have the word "official" in the title. They're created by moderators and only they are allowed to have the word "official" in the title. You can only get rewards from official challenges, not challenges generated by regular users.
