What counts as a duplicate pattern?

I’ve been trying to design some more normal patterns recently and I was wondering what the generator technically counts as a duplicate pattern. Some patterns like #74039 and #74040 look the same to me, but they were accepted anyways ( I don’t mean to be rude to the creator, designing normal patterns is a pretty complicated process), but I just personally couldn’t see a difference.

I can understand that the difference isn't that easy to see when you look at them quickly, especially because I didn't use the same colors for both, but I'll try to explain the difference simply : In the first one (#74039), every color do the little zigzag thing one after the other (in this case, it starts with color C, then B, then A, E, D, C, etc...). In the second one (#74040) there is always one color that skips the zigzag (color C does it, but not color B, then A does it but not E, then D does it but not C, etc...). If you want to see it easier, you can try to make variations for both with the same colors 🙂

The generator recognises patterns as variations if they have the exact same knotting structure as another pattern. If there is just one knot different it's on us moderators to figure out if the pattern already exists or not. Duplicates are patterns that look identical (especially for normal patterns there's often more than one way to achieve a certain look) or patterns that only have minor differences.

@Odanak1811 Yes, I can see the difference now. Thank you for explaining it to me. Again, I really hope that I didn’t come across as rude because I know normal patterns take a lot of work to create.
