Profanity filter

We should have a profanity filter for everything. So either your message won’t post if it contains a cuss word just like if it has a link, or it turns into the sign of *. I have been cussed at in my messages, and and I asked a person to stop and they wouldn’t so I wish it just filters out. It kind of gets out of hand, even on the comments of patterns because moderators aren’t perfect at filtering and sometimes miss things. I make an effort not to cuss, and I don’t appreciate seeing cuss words myself. Please put this high on the priority list for updates😬

If you mean bullying I totally agree, but if you just mean bad words like f- I believe that everyone should be able to say what they want, people shouldn't be censored too much. Also, some bad English words are totally fine in other languages (example: "assolutamente" is the Italian translation of absolutely, it has nothing to do with the naughty English word; "buttare" means "to throw away", etc.). A censoring system would be complicated… but if you want an option to turn it on/off (like the one in AmongUs) then I am ok with it

@indaco yeah I agree about the false positives. There’s a website I follow that uses comments with a profanity filter, except it’s so broken that if you type something like “as someone once said...” it’ll flag it as containing the word “a**”.Also, you hear about the paleontology Zoom conference that was thwarted by the automatic profanity filter? It censored any mention of the words ‘bone’ or ‘hole’ (kinda obvious why that’s a problem). There was also some controversy because it banned the word ‘wang’ even though it’s a really common surname in China, but not something like Johnson. So yeah, kinda hard to make a culturally neutral filter I guess. |

@indaco @eva-seria oh I definitely think it should be optional like among us, but still a thing especially because of younger kids in the chat, and bullying is not ok.

@indaco swearing is not acceptable on braceletbook and whenever we moderators do see a comment, forum post or chat message containing a swear word we remove it. That doesn't go for super mild swear words but the f word is definitely one we do remove. Now to everyone: The option of a swear word filter was discussed before. The conclusion we moderators came to is that it would not be effective since we also consider censored swear words as swear words and still remove them. We review all comments and forum posts anyway so we should be able to catch a majority of swear words used there. If we don't there's always the option to message one of the moderators to let us know about it. The same goes for the chat. |
