The number you see is the amount of rewards this person has. You can receive rewards by participating in official challenges (they can be found in the challenge section of the forum and have "official" in the title) or by reporting duplicate patterns (to do that just message a moderator, to find a moderator you go to "users" and then set the rank to "moderator" or "super moderator").

Those are the rewards they have. You get rewards by participating in the official monthly challenges. Sometimes you also get them for reporting patterns and really helping out the site.
