As long as it's not overly thick you can pretty much use any size for base strings in Alpha's. The sizes I use are either size 5 or 10. 🙂

Does it have to be crochet string for alphas or can you just do normal floss?

@jetsa_124 You can use regular embroidery floss too. Some people tend to use crochet thread for the Base Strings as it usually comes in a big ball so it lasts much longer than a skein of floss. It doesn't matter which you use, both work for being base strings. |

@chloe_27 I also use Aunt Lydia's size 3 crochet thread. I think it is a little bit thicker than normal embroidery thread but still works great for base strings as it doesn't break if you pull too hard.

@maya3456 yea... I thought it would be the same size as regular thread but it was thick but I works awesome for base strings

I use DMC petra for base strings as they come is really big balls of thread and I get those in size 5!

I don’t know about other sizes, but I know size ten is much, much smaller than normal embroidery floss. I’d say it’s maybe a third of the size, if not less. You could try it, but I don’t recommend it

I use Aunt Lydia's size 3 thread for base strings and it works really well! You can't tell that I'm using crochet thread instead of embroidery floss.
