An arrow going to the right represents a forward knot, an arrow going to the left represents a backward knot, an arrow going to the right then bending to the left represents a forward-backward knot, and an arrow going to the left then bending to the right represents a backward-forward knot. If you want a more detailed and comprehensive explanation, I recommend Masha Knots’ YouTube video called “Normal patterns and segment knotting tutorial”

first of all there are two types of patterns: normal patterns and alpha patterns. normal patterns are usually geometric patterns in which all the strings interact and knot with and onto each other. alpha patterns are patterns that usually display a specific image, and they are created with a leading string knotting over a number of base strings and you add colors as indicated by the pattern. for normal patterns, you can knot row by row or you can segment knot, but for alpha patterns, you have to knot row by row. row by row knotting is where you knot from left to right, like a book. segment knotting is when you find diagonal lines of a color and knot that line all at once. both patterns have circles with arrows inside each circle. for alphas, an arrow to the right indicates a forward knot and an arrow to the left indicates a backward knot. for normals, the arrows are slanted down but it is the same way as alphas: arrow to the right indicates forward knot, arrow to the left indicates backward knot. however, normals can also have an arrow that points right and bends to the left. that is a forward-backward knot. they can also have an arrow that points left and bends to right. that is a backward-forward knot. i strongly recommend watching tutorials on youtube by masha knots, alex’s innovations, kinsey b, etc because they go more in depth and they can explain it better than i can. i promise that if you continue practicing and following their videos, it will work out for you. hope that helps! 🙂
