Cutting Strings

I never know how long to cut the strings. When my friend taught me how to do candy stripe she said to make each string the length of my arm, but for some of the bigger bracelets I tried that I didn't have enough. Can someone please tell me if they know how long to cut the strings for any of the bracelets on my todo list?

I normally just guess and cut them really long and if I have extra....oh well but if the extra is really really really long I will use it for another easier bracelet like a candy strip or a V- hope this helped

But I also think that Bracelet book should have the length for the string to the side or something 🙂

I have a really good friendship bracelet book and it says to use 36 inches for each string.. And I've always had enough string in the 5 years I've made bracelets. Also there is never way too much string left over. Hope this helps!

thanks, TFK19, but is that for normals, alphas or both?

Oh! I also noticed that your bracelets have braids on the ends. Is the string for that included in the 36 inches?

The book was actually for normals but it works for almost all alphas (unless it's huge like more than 25 stings.. Then I would add maybe an extra 6-10 inches)

And with the braids I usually don't add extra for them unless I'm making them extra long (more than like 4 inches)

And no problem! Also, after you've made bracelets for a while you can usually tell how long to cut you're strings just by looking at it... You kinda just figure it out 🙂 good luck!

When I am making alphas I always make the base long enough for the bracelet and then the brades. The string I am using to tie on with I keep on the skien because the length needed is really unpredictable with alot of bracelets, when making bigger bracelets I go from shoulder to opposite finger tips or fingertips across collarbones and to opposite fingertips. Hope this helps x

I just cut them a random length and pray that it works and if it's too long I use the scraps for a different bracelet. I've never had a string be too short except for alphas.

I find I just know by eye, I'm far too lazy to measure the length in inches although it sounds like such a good idea and I will probably try it! But I do it by eye or as Ellie_x does from fingertips to opposite shoulder 🙂

I figured out that from my fingertips to the opposite shoulder is basically the same as 36 inches, so that's what I did for the bracelet I just started, #14694.
