Usually what I’ll do is just add an extra row at either the top or bottom of the pattern so there is an even number of strings

Usually I choose to do a triangle start instead because I find it easier and faster. I know that Masha Knots has a tutorial on her channel on to do a loop with an odd number of strings.

This is just how I do it, I don't know if there is a better or different way, but first, you cut your base strings, then fold them in half, then you will take you background string, and set maybe a 1 inch or 1 1/2 inches on the base strings, and carefully knot around the base strings, plus that tail, until you get to the length you need. Then you will just finish the loop like you normally would for an alpha. So incase that doesn't make sense, you are knotting around all of the base strings like you normally would, but you are also knotting around the tail that you added in. After the loop is made, if there is any of that tail still hanging out, you can just carefully cut it off.

I’ve never tried this, but some people just make the loop with one extra string (so like if the pattern was 23 base strings they would make the loop with 24) and they use the extra string as their leading string
