Uneven knots!

Hey everyone! I am very new to making bracelets but I know how to read patterns and make the 4 basic types of knots. The problem I’m facing with my bracelets is that the knots come out so different from each other! Like some are narrower, some are wider, and some (especially when it’s backward forward or forward backward) are taller. I’m not sure if it has something to do with the way I tighten the string or the direction I tighten it in or maybe the tension? But all the pictures of the bracelets on the cite have such even same sized knots that fit together like legos!

I try to tighten mine all the same way with the same tension but they still come out so different 🙁

Please any tips or help would be appreciated!

yes, this sounds like a tension issue. to fix that, you need to be aware of how consistently tight you are tying your knots. make sure the first knot is snug against the knots above it and make sure that the second knot carefully secures the first. also hold the string you are knotting onto tightly in your hand. believe me, having consistent knot tension comes from practice. i still have trouble sometimes making sure every knot is the same size. i hope that helps! 🙂

One thing that may be the cause it the type of string. Sometimes you may get uneven knots when you are using two different types of string. If not, you need to try to remember to do the same tightness for all bracelets and knots so you don't get too caught up.

@arf820 thank you, I will definitely try to make my tension more consistent throughout. Generally, do you have the same tension in the first knot as in the second? I heard people say that they tend to tie the position knot tighter thn the one that secures it, and vice versa.

generally, i tie my first knot tighter than my second knot because the first knot determines the placement of the whole knot itself. the second knot just secures it and determines the direction of the string. but of course you should still try to tie the second knot tightly, just it isn't necessary i guess to tie it as tight as the first. 🙂

Yes so you definitely should tie the first half of the knot tighter to ensure that the knot will stay in the place you want then tie the second half of the knot a smidge looser. It is sometimes hard for me to keep all my knots tied the same tightness because sometimes I don’t pull as hard...just try to pull as hard. (;

Also since you are newer to bracelets I recommend you tie your knots looser, I tie mine so tight I tend to rip the string but have gotten better

this is a problem that most beginners have but will mostly get better with practice. if i feel like my knots are becoming uneven, i like to set a certain number (20 or 50) and make that many candy stripes or chevrons. i would recommend chevrons, because they focus on two knots. i dont know how advanced you are with making patterns so that might be the issue, however starting back to the basics can be a big help.
