I used to make bracelets a few years ago but am completely stuck now, I just can’t get started 🙈 . I want to make pattern # 41288 for my daughter and would like it to be about 24mm width. Is it a normal pattern or alpha pattern? How many strings do I use? I just keep sitting looking at it and have done nothing. It’s confusing me as I just want the stripes on the edge so not sure how I carry the main colour across. Any advice would be very welcome.

Hello! That is a normal pattern ( an alpha pattern consists of a base string and a leading string ). I strongly suggest you watch Masha Knots' video ''Complete beginners guide'' and the ''Basic Knots'' video. Hope this helps 😊

i would also recommend those 2 videos, for they are great for beginners. but i would also recommend that if u are starting making bracelets again, start with something a little more simple like patterns #1 or #2. i got out of bracelets for a while and i tried to just jump back into them and let’s just say it didn’t go well 😂 but just practice and start slow and you will definitely get there!

Thanks guys. I’ve watched the suggested videos then thought I’d have a play. I know I’ve made mistakes but I’ve used 24 strings and it is measuring just over 24mm but is only half the pattern. Don’t know if I’m using the wrong thread or whether I can do anything to change the pattern as it will be ridiculously wide. It’s pattern # 41288. I’ll change my avatar so you can see what I mean about the width. Just don’t look at the mistakes 😂

as your'e making a normal pattern there is no need to carry any color of string across the pattern unless the pattern leads you to do that through the knot pattern.could you specify what your'e having trouble with? |

@mibiniri the bracelet needs to measure 24mm but I have only done half of the whole pattern & it measures 24mm so is com8ng our far too big.The pattern is #41288, there is no way I can condense it to fit into 24mm. I’m using DMC cotton perle size 5.

You could make the middle part smaller by using less strings for it.

i agree with @halokiwi. if you want to make the entire idea of the pattern (with the thick middle section and borders on the sides) but make it smaller you could just take out some strings in the middle and that will make the bracelet thinner. if your'e really set on making all 49 strings of the pattern and still have it be 24mm then i suggest you use thinner thread to knot will. now, that will probably a bit of a pain as there are many little strings that you will have to knot with and you said that you're just getting back to knotting so maybe consider the first option. (for thinner thread you could separate embroidery thread in half as its made of of 6 separate strands. but you mentioned that your'e using cotton perle and you can't separate that, so you'll need another thinner thread choice. also keep in mind that if you choose the second option your knots over all will be smaller). |

I have made the middle bit loads smaller & it’s still 24mm without the pattern on the other side. It’s not that I want to use 49 strings - I don’t, the pattern just said that. Think I’m going to have to try and condense the pattern right down. I don’t know why I get these bright ideas, though actually it’s because my daughter asked me to do it for her!!!

For base strings, I usually cut mines at 30+ cm and use the whole skein of thread for the leading string.

@doggies123 If you’re making a bracelet, the base strings should be the length that you want the bracelet itself to be, plus extra for the ties. If you’re making an alpha image that will be a specific number of rows (rather than a bracelet that will be a specific length), there are two methods: You can either use an alpha you’ve already made to figure out how long each row is, and then multiply that measurement by the number of rows there are in the pattern you’ll be making, or you can just approximate the length by multiplying the number of rows by 1.5mm. Make sure that whichever way you do it, you leave extra for the ties (the exact amount depends on the type of ties you’re doing)

@doggies123 Oh and the length of the leading string depends on how many knots there are of that color. If it’s a background color, you’ll probably end up using an entire skein

@mibiniri thanks, that pattern is similar. I’m going to mess around and see if I can reduce the strings down, I definitely don’t want 49. Thanks for your help. 👍
